Overview:
A family from the Pacific Northwest unravel a mystery from two sides, separated by vast distances. The mother and father have embarked on a dangerous mission through hostile territory suffering from extreme geological instability. The daughter, left alone to her own devices back home, must go deep undercover to expose corruption in the local government before she loses her ability to grow into the person she knows she is supposed to be. Below the Fold is a story about doing whatever it takes to move forward, and barely having any time to apologize to the people you had to leave behind. It’s a story about trusting yourself despite the protestations of everyone else in your life. It’s a story about a mother and a daughter who were chosen by fate to end up alone.I LOVE talking about my main influences, which include shows by Brad Wright, Amy Sherman-Palladino, Greg Berlanti, Bruno Heller, and Alan Ball. Please ask me about the movies, television, and games I’m into either here or on my Twitter to get a sense of who I am as an artist. Engaging with me helps me demonstrate my dedication to this project and really helps motivate the development process, so feel free to hit me up!Gameplay:
Below the Fold is like a show shot in Vancouver that’s all about a dysfunctional family dynamic between Dr. Daniel Jackson and Rory Gilmore, and it’s also an erotic RPG Maker game. The plot follows two Point of view characters as they complete what appear to be wildly different objectives on different corners of the globe. In the first adventure the player guides aspiring journalist Amber Gold through her hometown trying to come up with the incriminating evidence she needs to overturn the controversial policies of her school’s superintendent. Eventually she discovers that the only way to do that is to go undercover as a performer at the local strip club. It’s classic "young woman goes around town making questionable decisions" type gameplay not dissimiliar to games by Clymenia or Acerola. As her story unfolds she must make choices about which NPC relationships she prioritizes, whether that be because that person is doing her a favor, or if the player has developed feelings for their interactions. The other adventure follows Maple Gold’s quest to halt the progress of an ancient evil, a quest she has picked back up after Amber’s 18th birthday after having put it down years ago following her pregnancy. The player guides Maple and her husband Dom through Sand Age ruins during several different time periods and on multiple continents. At each step of the journey Maple has different team members which forces the player to overcome similar obstacles in diverse ways depending on what chapter they’re on. RPG combat is limited to boss monsters and will be used sparingly. (NO COMBAT SO FAR)Both adventures rely on exploration, examination, and having the right tool for the job. The puzzles in Below the Fold were inspired by those in the Golden Sun series of RPGs on Nintendo handhelds, which chiefly involved block pushing and hopping over 1 tile gaps in conjunction with maps featuring multiple elevations. Golden Sun also featured spells (psyenergies) which could be used in the field on certain targets to do things like freeze puddles into columns, stop moving objects in their tracks, etc. BtF’s expys of psyenergy targets are "purposed organisms," or special plants from the Sand Age ruins in the Amazon rainforest, which have been brought to Cliffton by a mysterious entity to aid Amber in her quest, should she have the knowledge to use them.

This update brings the first real chunk of story and gameplay from Maple’s perspective.Amber sees the Ep1 cliffhanger with Megan resolved. This also completes the introduction of the second available Gold Patron character: Megan’s somewhat overprotective older brother. The stage show and night shift questlines get opened, but the scenes for those jobs aren’t quite ready yet.
In the meantime you can explore The Club at the two different times of day, to note the differences in NPCs and crowds.Amber can now use wardrobes to change her outfit in the areas they appear. This mechanic will be much more fun once I’ve secured the help of an artist.NPCs can and will have different dialogues with the player depending on which event flags have been triggered and what they are wearing.Almost all of the little pauses in dialogue that pissed people off last episode are gone.
There is one scene (Maple and Dom crossing the bridge in Ep1) where pauses remain, but only because the script has to last until they get to the end of the bridge. The investigation of the Golden Gates has more content, including a scene between Amber and Roger that I had a ton of fun writing. NEW explorable areas in all chapters! Playable region in the prologue Both school days now playable The first club day is now playable Sidequests and optional events everywhere Puzzles! (don’t get your hopes up) The Crime Board: keep track of your investigation like a professional!
